The first principle of legal equality is that no one should be above the law. Even the lawmakers themselves, and those charged with executing or interpreting the law, must be subject to the same laws as the common citizen, as well as to laws governing the conduct of their office.
The expression, “equal protection of laws”, is a corollary of the first expression “equality before the law”, and is based on the last clause of the first section of the Fourteenth Amendment to the American Constitution.
