Trinidad, the larger island, comprises 1,841 square miles. It is seven miles (11 kilometres) at the nearest point from the Venezuelan coast, from which it is separated by the Gulf of Paria and two narrow channels, where there are several small islands and rocks. Tobago, the smaller island, with an area of about 115 square miles, lies in the Atlantic 19 miles to the northeast of Trinidad. In 2004 the country's population was estimated at slightly less than 1,100,000 inhabitants. The petroleum industry dominates the economy, which is thus subject to fluctuations in the global oil market. Tourism and manufacturing are also important sources of revenues.
