The Mosaic Law: Its Function and Purpose in the New

21.086.4175 hours ago

1. In the Old Testament, the word “law” is used to translated the Hebrew word torah, “instruction.” The Hebrew word for “law” probably comes from the causative form of the verb yarah, “to throw,” “to shoot (arrows).” In the hiphil stem, the verb horah means “to point, guide, instruct, teach.” Hence, the law is that which provides authoritative guidance. In the New Testament, the Greek word used for law is nomos. Nomosmeans “that which is assigned,” hence, “usage, custom,” and then “law,” or “a rule governing one’s actions.” Thus God’s law is His system of rules by which He shows and instructs in His will and administers the affairs of the world. Obviously the definition allows for and even implies that there might be differing systems of rules at various times, depending on what particular aspects or how much of His will God wishes to show at a given time.…A system of rules may be tailored for different times, peoples, or purposes. . .6 As a result, in the progress of God’s revelation...

How to Read the Mosaic Law (Part 3) – What is Truth

21.086.4179 hours ago

1. If that’s your takeaway after reading this passage you need to consider the possibility that you have a hostile bias that’s causing you to completely miss the author’s intention. The clear purpose of this text is to protect slaves from their masters. What’s shocking about this text is not that it assumes the Israelite society will have slaves or that the masters will be disciplining their slaves. What’s shocking is that contrary to the way slavery has been practiced in all times and places, in Israel there will be limits on what a master is permitted to do. What’s shocking is that under the Mosaic law slaves have rights. Whatever other questions we ask, one of them should be, “Why is this legal code from 1200-1500 BC more enlightened than laws that existed in the US less than 200 years ago?”

Lesson 36: Free from the Law (Romans 7:16) Bible.org

21.086.4179 hours ago

1. In my judgment, one of the most difficult theological issues in the Bible is that of the believers relationship to the law of God. Since the word law is used 19 times in Romans 7, clearly that is Pauls theme. I was hoping that the Lord might come before I got to this chapter! I still have some time to be rescued before I get to the most difficult part! In Romans 7 Paul expounds on his statement in Romans 6:14, For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law, but under grace. In 6:15-23, he used the analogy of slavery to show that we will not sin under grace because we have become enslaved to God and righteousness. In chapter 7, he explains what it means to be free from the law and how this relates to breaking free from sins tyranny. The theme in chapter 6 was sin; Paul uses that word 17 times there. In his mind, there was a direct correlation between sin and the law. In 1 Corinthians 15:56 he says, The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. So there are several parallels between chapters 6 & 7 (Leon Morris, The Epistle to the Romans [Eerdmans/Apollos], p. 270): Believers have died to sin (6:2) and they have died to the law (7:4). We have been freed from sin (6:18, 22) and we are released from the law (7:6). We walk in newness of life (6:4) and we serve in newness of the Spirit (7:6). Our victory over sin is tied to our union with Christ in His death and resurrection (6:8-11). Our release from the law and its sin-arousing power is because we are now joined to the crucified and risen Lord (7:4).

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the purpose of the Mosaic Law?

Although the Law was good and holy ( Romans 7:12 ), it did not provide salvation for the nation of Israel. “No one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin” ( Romans 3:20; cf. Acts 13:38–39 ).

Is the Mosaic law still in force today?

But the moral portion of the Mosaic law, say they, is still in force as the believer’s rule of life. The treatment given to Christian ethics by some highly respected authors is indeed but little more than an exposition of the Decalogue.

How are we delivered from the curse of the Mosaic Law?

Believers are delivered from the curse of the law through Christ’s death on the cross (Romans 7:4-6; Romans 10:1-11; Galatians 5:18; 1 Timothy 1:5-11; Hebrews 7:11-28) We can see from these references and more that the Mosaic Law had many purposes.

Do you have to be circumcised under Mosaic Law?

No. These faithful men were determined to follow the Scriptures and the leadings of God’s holy spirit. After hearing all the pertinent testimony, the governing body unanimously agreed that there was no need for Gentile Christians to get circumcised and come under the Mosaic Law.
