Compulsory Education Laws: Background FindLaw

21.086.4173 hours ago

1. In ancient Judea, even before Plato's The Republic popularized the idea of mandatory education, Jewish leaders required parents to provide at least an informal education for their children. In fact, rabbis founded a number of schools throughout the regionand encouraged parents to send their children to school beginning at the age of six. But the Aztec Triple Alliance (which ruled modern-day central Mexico in the 15th and early 16th centuries) is widely credited as being the first nation to make education mandatory for all children. With the Reformation (beginning in 1524), Martin Luther called for mandatory schooling laws to ensure that more Christians could read the Bible on their own. As the Reformation spread throughout Europe, so did the enactment of mandatory education laws. But while Scotland established an education mandate for the children of privileged families in 1496, this mandate didn't include commoners until the country enacted the School Establishment Act of 1616. 1. Many students live well beneath the maximum amount the budget allows in part because South Bend’s cost of living is quite low. Housing costs are far below what they are in other markets, and can be even easier to manage when sharing housing. The cost of attending three years of law school can be a significant financial commitment, and taking out student loans is common. You can manage your debt by establishing and following a budget, borrowing only as much as you need, pursuing external scholarships, minimizing other debt, and making financial choices in law school that will not have long-term ramifications by increasing your debt.

The admissions process prohibits an evaluation of whether or not the student should be enrolled based on his or her academic or athletic performance, physical condition, or proficiency in English. How to Pay for Law School (in 2021) – Biglaw Investor

1. Ask family for financial help. This can be a touchy subject as your family may or may not be in a position to help. Additionally, you’re probably going to law school with the goal of becoming a functioning independent adult and you may not want to burden your family with requests for money.
2. Work a part time or a full time job. Prior to 2014, the ABA encouraged law students to spend no more than 20 hours a week working. Then, they realized that law students were drowning in debt and they dropped the requirement.
3. Scholarships and grants. Earning a scholarship or grant to go to law school is a big deal. This is probably not a new idea to you. For most law students, the competing factors here are whether you should go to a higher-ranked school (and pay full price) or go to a lower ranked school (and receive financial assistance).
4. Consider a public law school. The main difference between a public and private law school is in the funding. Public schools receive funding from the government while private law schools receive funding from private donors.
5. Take out student loans. It is very likely that you will have to take out a student loan in order to cover the rest of your law school expenses that cannot be covered by all the other efforts to raise money.

The Establishment Clause and the Schools: A Legal Bulletin

21.086.4174 hours ago

1. The Supreme Court has long held that the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment forbids school-sponsored prayer or religious indoctrination. Over thirty years ago, the Court struck down classroom prayers and scripture readings even where they were voluntary and students had the option of being excused. See School Dist. of Abington Township v. Schempp, 374 U.S. 203 (1963); Engel v. Vitale, 370 U.S. 421 (1962). The Court earlier had struck down a "released-time" program providing voluntary religious instruction in public schools during regular school hours. See Illinois ex rel. McCollum v. Board of Educ., 333 U.S. 203, 209-10 (1948). More recently, the Supreme Court has held that a school district may not require that students observe a moment of silence at the beginning of the school day where the purpose of such a requirement is that students use that time for prayer. Wallace, 472 U.S. at 40. In a similar vein, the Court has held that the state may not require the posting of th...
