California’s “Basic Speed Law” means that you may never drive faster than is safe for current conditions. Regardless of the posted speed limit, your speed should depend on: The number and speed of other vehicles on the road. Whether the road surface is smooth, rough, graveled, wet, dry, wide, or narrow.
The California Vehicle Code covers everything to do with the rules of the roads and driving, including: Registration and titling of vehicles. Anti-theft laws. Driver's license procedures and processes. Financial responsibility and car insurance. Rules of the road. Towing and loading rules and regulations.
Individuals who ignore posted signs and use private roads without permission are trespassing, a crime under state law. A first violation is punishable by a fine of $500 and-or 90 days in jail.
