Law School Requirements for Admissions: Getting into Law

1. High LSAT - This is the most important of the law school requirements--kicking a** (apparently this is a family site) on the LSAT is the single best way to hack the law school system because (a) it takes less time to do well on the LSAT than to do well in college or get into a college; and (b) it is the single most important criterion.
2. Undergraduate/college GPA This is the second most important factor. With a decent but not outstanding LSAT score, you can get into most places if you have an outstanding undergraduate GPA.
3. Connections. If you know the right people at a law school, or you are the child of a famous lawyer, or better yet you are the child of a famous lawyer who donates tons of money to the school, your connections can push you over the top if your LSAT and GPA are at least ballpark or not much below.
4. Diversity. The right background (i.e., black, Hispanic or native American) can offset a decent but lackluster LSAT and, to a lesser extent, undergraduate GPA.
5. Prestige of undergraduate school/college. Now, this can help offset a decent but not outstanding LSAT score and decent but not outstanding GPA (I know this from personal experience).
6. Law school personal statement. This is extremely important to your application if you write a terrible essay--it will kill your chances of getting into to law school.
7. Recommendation letters. Unless you know someone who falls into the category of a "major connection" (see above item 4), or you worked for a famous law professor or lawyer as an undergraduate, your recommendation letters will not count for anything at all.
8. Law School Resume/Work History. While this is always one of the several law school requirements, I don't think your work history ultimately matters much for getting into law school: an unimpressive work history won't matter if you have a good LSAT and grades.

1. Getting to Maybe. This is the essential guide that nearly everyone reads to get ready for law school exams. Skim it once now to get an idea what exams are like- this will help you focus on what’s important when you start class in the fall.
2. Law 101: Everything You Need to Know About The American Legal System. Kick-start your understanding of the law here. This book is pretty basic, but it gives you an excellent primer on stuff you’ll be learning in much more depth 1L year.
3. Law School Confidential: A Complete Guide to The Law School Experience. This book tells you everything you need to know to navigate 1L year successfully, from how to brief cases to how to prepare outlines for exams.
4. 24 Hours with 24 Lawyers. This one was a recommendation by Anne Levine, the well-known admissions consultant and author of The Law School Admissions Game (the book I recommend most often for learning about the law school admissions process).
5. 1L by Scott Turow. This is Josh’s recommendation, a fantastic book about a Harvard Law student’s first year written by the well-known practicing lawyer and fiction writer.
6. Anonymous Lawyer. Anonymous Lawyer is a parody book, in the form of a blog ostensibly written by a partner at a major law firm, covering his plot to take over the position of managing partner.
7. The Elements of Style. Although this book is not specific to lawyers or law school students, it is perhaps the most well-regarded and oft-read guide to writing in the English language.
8. An Introduction to Legal Reasoning. Written by Edward Levi, the now-deceased famed legal professor who taught at the University of Chicago, this book is required reading in many “Elements of the Law” courses.
9. Read a Book About the City You of Your Law School. When we were about to start at the University of Chicago Law, the school recommended we read Devil in the White City, a non-fiction “novel” about the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago and the serial killer H.H.
