My starting salary as a patent attorney, fresh out of law school (2008), was 75k. It is easy to get misled by salaries. As u/clownsheep pointed out, the top of the scale for starting salaries is set by large firms. What is seldom mentioned is how small of a percentage of law school graduates get jobs at those firms.

Yes, you can technically do patent prosecution anywhere, but odds are unlikely you'll be able to do well for yourself just hanging out a shingle. You'll want to work for a firm (for the training if nothing else), and there are only so many that do this kind of work in so many cities. The median wage for a lawyer, per the U.S. Census, is $114k.

(1) I would try to get the law school out of the way sooner, rather than later. It makes more sense to go into debt and pay it off when you are making a much higher salary as a patent attorney, rather than saving for it from a smaller paycheck. (2) You can also work at a law firm as a FT patent agent, and go to law school at night for 4 years

First year lawyers at big firms make $160k starting salary, but there are less jobs at big firms than jobs for patent agents (I cannot confirm that is true, but I think other people you would talk to in the area would agree). You do not need a law degree to become a patent agent, which I think you already knew. You only need to take the patent bar, and need a qualifying scientific …

25th percentile: $120,000. 50th percentile: $154,250. 75th percentile: $198,750. 90th percentile: $223,500. Sample size of 92. This was back when $160k was market for first years. So back then, I'd assume starting pay for first years in patent law outside of biglaw (the above data was first through fifth years) was probably $90-$125k.

I make USD$110,000, and once I finish law school next year, as an attorney, I will make approximately USD$170,000 base salary, and potential bonuses of USD$15,000.

Got hired as a contract attorney in big law, got paid hourly, $37/hr plus OT but capped at 60 hours. Probably averaged $85k. Left for in-house procurement counsel at $80k in 2015. Making $100k now after a few raises. Looking elsewhere because a colleague was just hired as associate general counsel at a competitor for $180k.
