1. Statutory Sick Pay. Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is to increase from £95.85 to £96.35 per week. The increases to the family-friendly rates will apply from the first Sunday in April (4th April 2021) and the increase to SSP from 6th April 2021.
2. Maternity pay. The rates for 2021/22 for statutory maternity, paternity, adoption, parental bereavement and shared parental pay is set to increase from £151.20 to £151.97 per week.
3. State pension payments. State Pension payments are a lifeline for thousands of older people across the UK and the increase means that those on the full, new State Pension will receive £179.60 per week, an increase of £4.40 on the current rate of £175.20.
4. Council tax. Around two-thirds of England’s major councils are set to impose a 5% council tax hike in April.
5. Lockdown. From April 12, the second step in the roadmap out of lockdown will take effect, with non-essential retailers opening, and the hospitality sector welcoming customers once more.
6. 2021 National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage rates. The Government has announced the National Living Wage (NLW) and National Minimum Wage (NMW) rates which will come into force from April 2021.
7. NHS prescriptions. NHS prescription charges in England will rise to £9.35 on April 1. The price of a three-month PPC will become £30.25 (an increase of 60p) and a 12-month PPC will be £108.10 (an increase of £2.20).
8. Landlords must comply with new electricity rules. The new regulations, titled The Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020, were officially brought in on 1st April 2020 and apply to all new tenancies as of 1st July 2020.
9. Licence fee. The annual TV licence fee is to increase by £1.50, from £157.50 to £159, from 1 April 2021. It is the final - and lowest - annual increase under a deal between the BBC and the government that has seen the fee rise in line with inflation every year since 2017.
10. DWP benefit payment rates. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) recently confirmed that State Pension will rise by 2.5% and benefits by 0.5% from April this year.
