Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a limit to how many hours you can drive in a day?

However, this is not a "daily" limit. Under this provision, a driver could hypothetically drive for 11 hours, take 10 hours off, and drive for another 3 hours before the end of the 24-hour day. Drivers of passenger-carrying CMVs are limited to 10 hours of driving after having 8 consecutive hours off duty.

How long can you not drive after 30 hours of service?

The break may be satisfied by any non-driving period of 30 consecutive minutes (i.e., on-duty not driving, off-duty, sleeper berth, or any combination of these taken consecutively). May not drive after 60/70 hours on duty in 7/8 consecutive days.

What are the penalties for driving over the legal speed limit?

Under age 21 with any bodily alcohol content. 16 mph or more over the legal speed limit. Failure to yield/show due caution for emergency vehicles. Careless driving. Disobeying a traffic signal or stop sign or improper passing. 11 through 15 mph over the legal speed limit.

How long can you Drive after a 14 hour rest break?

A meal break or other time spent off-duty counts as the rest break, and the rest break counts as part of the 14-hour window. You may do other work after your 11 driving hours are over, but may not drive again until after a 10-hour rest period. The 60-hour/7-day or 70-hour/8-day rolling schedule can be confusing.
