The Law Does Not Annul the Promise Desiring God

21.086.4171 hours ago

1. Whether or not you have the patience to look with me for half an hour at Galatians 3:15–18depends in large measure on the way you live your life. This text has nothing in it that is immediately practical. It has to do with the theological content of the Abrahamic covenant and the historical and theological relationship between that covenant and the law of Moses, which came 430 years later. If you live your life on the basis of spiritual pep pills that give an immediate emotional charge and specific practical guidance, then you will have a hard time with the next 30 minutes. But if you live your life on the basis of an ever-deepening understanding of the ways of God in Scripture, you will relish Paul's theology in these verses and seek to enlarge and (if necessary) correct the theological foundation of your life. I said that the text is not immediatelypractical. There are profound implications for practice here, as we will see; but to see and experience them requires a process of tho...

Lesson 36: Free from the Law (Romans 7:16) Bible.org

21.086.4179 hours ago

1. In my judgment, one of the most difficult theological issues in the Bible is that of the believers relationship to the law of God. Since the word law is used 19 times in Romans 7, clearly that is Pauls theme. I was hoping that the Lord might come before I got to this chapter! I still have some time to be rescued before I get to the most difficult part! In Romans 7 Paul expounds on his statement in Romans 6:14, For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law, but under grace. In 6:15-23, he used the analogy of slavery to show that we will not sin under grace because we have become enslaved to God and righteousness. In chapter 7, he explains what it means to be free from the law and how this relates to breaking free from sins tyranny. The theme in chapter 6 was sin; Paul uses that word 17 times there. In his mind, there was a direct correlation between sin and the law. In 1 Corinthians 15:56 he says, The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. So there are several parallels between chapters 6 & 7 (Leon Morris, The Epistle to the Romans [Eerdmans/Apollos], p. 270): Believers have died to sin (6:2) and they have died to the law (7:4). We have been freed from sin (6:18, 22) and we are released from the law (7:6). We walk in newness of life (6:4) and we serve in newness of the Spirit (7:6). Our victory over sin is tied to our union with Christ in His death and resurrection (6:8-11). Our release from the law and its sin-arousing power is because we are now joined to the crucified and risen Lord (7:4).

Bible in American Law Civil Liberties and Civil Rights

21.086.4177 hours ago

1. The Bible had extensive and direct influence on law in America during the colonial period, especially in the North. Without any doubt, the ideal notion of civic order in Puritan New England thoroughly embraced divine words and intentions as revealed in the law of Moses. The Laws and Liberties of Massachusetts, an early Puritan document warned, ‘‘The more any law smells of man, the more unprofitable.’’ Calvinism held that the judicial language in the law of Moses was binding on all people and should be incorporated into the laws of the land. Accordingly, the list of fifteen crimes punishable by death within the jurisdiction of Massachusetts (printed in 1641) was collected and crafted from the texts of the Bible and cited chapter and verse following each law. These provisions against idolatry, witchcraft, blasphemy, manslaughter, sexual offenses, kidnapping, perjury in capital cases, and subversion, offered no protections for religious liberty, freedom of speech, or rights of the accu...

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the law against the promises of God?

No, you are quite wrong; the law was not added to teach a different way for Israel to gain the inheritance. The law (as 3:21 says) is not at all against the promises. Let's see how Paul makes this point. He begins in verse 15 with an analogy.

Is it true that the law does not annul the promise?

To give a human example, brethren: no one annuls even a man's will, or adds to it, once it has been ratified. Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, "And to offsprings," referring to many; but, referring to one, "And to your offspring," which is Christ.

What does the Bible say about without the law?

For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law; But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.

Who is the penalty of " the law " in the Bible?

At last the penalty of “the law” is paid. That Suffering Servant of Isaiah is the Messiah, Jesus Christ, God’s Son. In the New Testament, “the law” refers back to that old situation when people looked at obedience to the commandments as the way of acceptance with God.
