Getting Your Lawn Mower Ready for Spring Runnings

Estimated Reading Time: 6 mins
1. Start with Safety. Before you perform any maintenance, it’s important that you first disconnect the spark wire, especially when you’re tending to the mower blades.
2. Run a General Inspection. Inspect your lawn mower from head to toe and take a general inventory of parts that need to be replaced or cleaned. Check all surfaces, re-tighten screws and nuts, and inspect your tires and wheels.
3. Change the Fuel. If you’ve already performed the proper procedures for storing your lawn mower during the winter, you shouldn’t have any fuel leftover in the tank.
4. Replace the Oil. You’ll know if your oil needs to be replaced, as oil changes color over time. And unlike a fine wine, oil does NOT get better with age.
5. Clean or Replace the Air Filters. Over time, air filters will get clogged up with dust, pollen, and dirt. It’s important to keep your air filters clean – these handy tools prevent debris from entering your carburetor, thus allowing your lawn mower to run smooth and purr like a kitten.
6. Sharpen the Mower Blades. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – always double-check to make sure your spark wire is disconnected before doing any maintenance on your blades!
7. Run a Good, Thorough Cleaning. While your blades are still removed, now is a good time to give your lawn mower a good cleaning. Tip your mower over and turn your garden hose – with your Melnor® AquaFloTitanium™ Series Heavy-Duty Metal Fireman’s Nozzle – to its strongest setting to spray off all grass and debris that have stuck to the underside of your mower deck.
8. Lubricate All Moving Parts. We’re almost done – now it’s time to lubricate! Poor lubrication creates friction and excess heat in your mower, which will damage its parts.
9. Check the Spark Plugs. Once you’ve completed all other maintenance, give your spark plugs a good, thorough run through. Check to see if there is any damage or corrosion from rust – if there is, you’ll need to replace them with new ones.

11 Tips to Get your Lawn Mower Ready for Spring Greg's

1. Tool Breakdown. You’ll need a few basic tools, all of which can be found in your garage and toolbox: Gloves. Grease gun. Phillips and flat tip screwdrivers. Shop vacuum.
2. Oil Check. Something as basic as checking the oil level in your mower is something everyone puts off — so don’t! The oil must be the correct viscosity, too.
3. Spark Plug Check. Ever see a guy on the street yanking his mower start cord repeatedly? Chances are his mower’s spark plug is bad. If the plug’s worn out or faulty, replace it immediately.
4. How Long Does a Lawn Mower Spark Plug Last? That depends entirely on the intensity and frequency with which you use your machine. A bad spark plug can even lead to a misfire.
5. Filter Check — Air. An air filter can also be the culprit in a start delay. This can be as easy as taking your screwdriver and unscrewing the air filter cover.
6. Filter Check — Fuel. The fuel filter requires a little more effort than an air filter. To remove the old filter, clamp off the fuel line and plug the filter intake — your fingertip works just fine.
7. Get Greasy. Check your manual and grease up the fittings with the manufacturer’s recommended black lotion.
8. Wheels Don’t Get Tired. Push mowers generally doesn’t have air tires. Riding mowers do. Check a push mower’s wheels for cracks. Check a riding mower’s tires for the punctures and make sure they’re properly inflated.
9. Blade (the Reboot) If your mower’s blades have dulled, they need to be sharpened. Dull blades cut grass like wheat gets shredded. Not only will the uneven results be unappealing, it’s actually bad for your lawn.
10. Top Off. Old gas is like old beer: it won’t have the same effect. If the gas sitting in your mower’s tank has been there a while, it’s time to refresh it.

7 Maintenance Tips to Get Your Mower Ready for Spring

1. Check the Oil. Your lawn mower’s oil is one of the most critical engine maintenance checks. Monitor your oil level in your mower every mowing season. If the oil has debris in it or is starting to look black, it means it is time to change the oil.
2. Check the Oil Filter. Another key check is the oil filter. The oil filter keeps debris and large particles out of your oil. It is best to change your oil filter once per mowing season or as often as your owner’s manual recommends.
3. Check the Fuel Filter. Your fuel filter keeps your carburetor free from foreign particles that may clog it. If it is not changed in the correct intervals, your mower may stall out or be hard to start.
4. Check the Air Filter. Air filters keep a mower operating at best performance. When an air filter gets dirty or clogged, it puts more stress on the engine causing it to burn more gas.
5. How is the Spark Plug? Is your mower hard to start or does it die out? There is a good chance it is a bad spark plug. Changing your spark plug every year will ensure an easy start.
6. Clean Under the Mower Deck. As you mow, especially in wet conditions, grass clippings can get stuck in your mower deck. This can rust your deck or clog the discharge chute over time if not cleaned.
7. Inspect Your Mower Blades. Inspect your mower blades before the mowing season starts. Check to see if dents or chips are present or if the blade looks bent.

7 Lawn Mower Maintenance Tips to Get You Ready for Spring

1. Change the oil. Dirt and debris in your oil will mess up your engine big time. Now is a good time to change it. I recommend doing this once per season and checking the oil level throughout spring and summer.
2. Replace the air filter. If you’ve been following my advice, you have been cleaning the air filter before each use. It’s a good idea to go ahead and replace it every year.
3. Clean or replace the spark plugs. Dirty plugs will cause backfires and slow starting. Not to mention using up more gas while you cut. I don’t replace mine every year.
4. The best way to sharpen lawn mower blades. This step is so important it should have been number 1. A dull blade will make grass cutting feel like a chore.
5. Change out the fuel. Gasoline that isn’t in a sealed container can go bad. Sounds weird I know. At the time of refining, it is a perfect mixture to burn.
6. Tighten the bolts. Now is a good time to check all the bolts and tighten them up. First, check the blade. You don’t want that coming off while you’re cutting.
7. Examine the undercarriage. Remember all those times your grass was too wet to cut but you did it anyway? All those clumps are stuck to the bottom of your mowing deck and blocking proper operation of your mower.

Get your lawn mower in tiptop shape this spring

1. Change the oil. Clean oil is critical to keeping your engine lubricated and running smoothly. If you didn’t change the oil at the end of the lawn-cutting season, make sure to do it now.
2. Replace the air filter. The purpose of the air filter is to protect your engine from dirt and debris. An extremely dirty air filter can lead to engine problems and potentially costly repairs.
3. Sharpen the blade. Your lawn mower blade is critical to maintaining your lawn and keeping it healthy. Hitting debris such as rocks, stones, sticks, and mulch can quickly dull it.
4. Give it a good wash. Grass clippings and other debris can build up underneath the mowing deck. If moisture is present, it can lead to mold growth. Use a putty knife, garden hose, or pressure washer regularly to keep it clean.
5. Change the spark plug. If you’re having a difficult time starting your lawn mower, it may be time to change the spark plug. Over time, deposit buildup can occur.
6. Look for rodents. During the winter months, mice need a nice warm place to stay. If they find their way into your garage or shed, it’s likely they’ll find a nice engine to snuggle up to.
7. Check tire pressure. Cold weather can reduce tire pressure. Before cutting your lawn, don’t forget to check tire pressure. If a tire has more air than others, it could cause uneven mowing.
8. Inspect the battery. If you kept your battery indoors or on a trickle charger, it should be ready to go when the grass starts growing. If you kept it in your mower, check for cracks in the casing or corrosion buildup.

How to Winterize Your Lawn Mower and Be Ready for Spring

1. Cover is Important. If you expect any piece of equipment to last, one of the most important steps you can take is to give it proper cover from the elements.
2. Iron Sharpens Iron. You guessed it. Before you put your mower up for the year, it’s time to perform basic maintenance on it. Basic maintenance could be anything from sharpening the blades, to oiling exposed moving parts on the mower.
3. Time for an Oil Change. After running your mower all season, it’s a good idea to put fresh oil in it before putting it away. Some people prefer to change it after a season’s use because they don’t want dirty oil sitting in the lawn mower all winter.
4. Ditch the Fuel. Ditching the fuel is perhaps the item of greatest importance on the winterizing list. Be sure you drain the lawn mower of all fuel. When you are positive you’ve removed it all, crank the lawn mower to let any remaining fuel which may have found a place to hide, burn off.
5. Unplug the Battery. Some people have shifted to all-electric mowers. Other people have traditional mowers with a battery. Either way, your battery needs care.
6. Mr. Clean. One of my biggest pet peeves is when my husband tries to put something away knowing it isn’t ready for its next use. Well, a lawn mower is no different.
7. Pay Attention to Where You Store. You may think if you store your lawn mower in a garage or carport, you’re good to go. Well, not exactly. Accidents happen over winter.

6 Easy Steps to Prepare Your Electric Lawn Mower for Spring

1. Find Your Electric Push Lawn Mower Manual. Every lawn mower is different, so it is important to follow the care instructions that come with the machine.
2. Check the Cord. Having a safe, reliable power supply is important. Before you take your corded electric lawn mower out for the year, you should check the cord to make sure it is in good condition.
3. Clean the Deck. Each time you mow the lawn, a significant amount of grass and debris is going to accumulate in the mower deck. Over several uses, this debris can build up and clog the machine.
4. Check and Change Lawn Mower Blades. You should also clean and check the blade at the beginning of every spring. A dull blade will not only make your electric powered lawn mower less efficient, but it can also damage your yard.
5. Tighten the Mower’s Hardware. Lawn mowers can generate a significant amount of vibration when they run. Over many seasons of using your electric push lawn mower, this can cause some of the fasteners and parts to come loose.
6. Check the Vents on Your Electric Powered Lawn Mower. Your electric push lawn mower should have some air vents on the body. These vents help to keep the components from overheating when the machine is in operation.
