Perhaps the most common example of private law is civil law. This branch of law seeks to help parties, where typically neither is the government, settle personal disputes. Common civil law cases involve contract disputes, bankruptcy, violations regarding consumer protection, and other private matters, such as divorces and child custody.
Common law is a term used to refer to the laws that are developed through decisions of the court, rather than by relying solely on statutes or regulations. They are also known as “case laws,” or “case precedent”. Example: Kesavanand Bharati v.
Price’s law says that 50% of the work is done by the square root of the total number of people who participate in the work. I learned about Price’s law when I watched a lecture by Dr. Jordan Peterson, psychology professor, and author of 12 Rules For Life.
Examples of public laws would include criminal laws, laws regulating commerce, etc. The vast majority of laws enacted by Congress or by the states are public laws.
