1. Service. The effective manager exemplifies service, self-giving, and selflessness. The core purpose of coming to work every day is to serve, to give our complete attention and effort toward developing and enhancing the abilities and interests of others.
2. Honesty.
3. Integrity. Developing and demonstrating integrity is essential for all law enforcement managers. Integrity depends on consistently doing what is right, meaning that which is in the best interest of the organization and of others.
4. Humility. Humility is a most vital principle in effective leadership. True humility is the quality of always looking for ways to learn from others and improve ourselves.
5. Purpose. Effective managers must find ways to tap into the understanding and core beliefs of their employees to get them to identify with the central purpose and nobility of our work.
6. Mentoring. “Developing into an effective law enforcement leader is a continuous, personal learning process.”
7. Positive/Constructive Attitude. Managers who genuinely portray a positive and constructive attitude are like a magnet that draws others toward them. Always contagious, a positive, optimistic attitude enables employees to look for the good and to try to be constructive working to change things for the better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no leadership in law enforcement?

Unfortunately, many organizations have failed to prepare the next generation adequately. Traditional criminal justice programs and police academies do not teach leadership skills but rather focus on “reducing and solving crime with little training devoted to effective leadership,” according to The Police Chief magazine.

Which is the best model for police leadership?

Most military and police forces have “historically followed a very authoritative model,” said former U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Ryan Sheehy, an adjunct professor in University of San Diego’s online master’s degree in Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership.

How does great leadership drive high performance police chief?

From the tumultuous times experienced during the 1960s to the fiscal constraints law enforcement faces today, police researchers and practitioners have sought methods and strategies to drive U.S. law enforcement toward more efficient and effective operations, both internally and externally.

What makes a good law enforcement officer adaptable?

Adaptability Law enforcement is an exciting, and often unpredictable, career. Every day is unique, with different calls and cases coming in every hour. As a result, law enforcement officers must be adaptable and ready for whatever comes their way. One day they may be assigned overseeing a local marathon or parade.
