normally belts last a couple of years but its like the tires on your car, how fast it wears out depends on how much you use it and the quality of the belt. not saying you need oem belts but good quality belts, just like good quality tires, last longer then cheap ones do. at least every 10-12 grass cuttings the blades should be sharpened as well

However, eventually these belts will wear out to the point they will snap; and when they do, the mower will no longer operate correctly. Without the deck drive belt, the mower won't cut any grass as the PTO (power take off) will not engage and the blades won't turn.
The ground drive belt connects the engine crankshaft to the transaxle pulley to drive the rear wheels. If the belt breaks, the lawn tractor won't move. If the belt is worn, the lawn tractor moves sluggishly because the belt slips on the pulley.
There is a simple explanation for this: The drive belt keeps mower blades spinning. Replacing the broken belt is not complicated, and you should be able to do the job yourself in about 30 minutes. Park your John Deere100 tractor on flat ground.
