A flaw is a weakness of sorts that the character gains. Characters who choose a flaw should be allowed to gain a feat or increase two of their ability scores by +1 (or one by +2). Flaws should only be chosen at first level, but some situations could arise where a flaw is granted at a later level. The GM has final say on such matters.

What happens when you roll a 1 for an attack roll in Dungeons & Dragons? So you automatically miss, no matter what your attack roll modifier is and no matter how easy …

Characters who choose a flaw should be allowed to gain a feat or increase two of their ability scores by +1 (or one by +2). Flaws should only be chosen at first level, but some situations could arise where a flaw is granted at a later level.
They must make a Wisdom Saving Throw with a base DC of 10 modified by +2 for every hit dice higher the target of the attack has vs. the attacker (or -2 for every hit dice less). On a fail they are frightened (see p292 of Player’s Handbook). After one turn they can attempt the saving throw again.
There’s one more general rule you need to know at the outset. Whenever you divide a number in the game, round down if you end up with a fraction, even if the fraction is one-half or greater. The Dungeons & Dragons game consists of a group of characters embarking on an adventure that the Dungeon Master presents to them.
Chapter 6 of the Player’s Handbook defines two optional sets of rules for customizing your character: multiclassing and feats. Multiclassing lets you combine classes together, and feats are special options you can choose instead of increasing your ability scores as you gain levels. Your DM decides whether these options are available in a campaign.
