In 1992, California became one of a few states to require anyone riding on a motorcycle or motorized bike to wear a helmet. While many states with helmet laws limit helmet requirements to children and teenagers, California’s law mandates helmet use by everyone. It did not take long to see the positive effects of California’s mandatory helmet law.
An equipment violation is a $10 fine with a proof of correction, according to the California Vehicle Code. The California Highway Patrol, however, states that a violation of the helmet law is an immediate safety hazard and is therefore not correctable.
California law is somewhat opaque on this point, but in fact sidewalks are included in the law, 6 and cyclists under 18 are required to wear a helmet while riding on the sidewalk.
