Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best law school for BigLaw jobs?

My alma mater, UChicago, tops the chart at #1 with an impressive 88% of the class of 2017 working in BigLaw. The drop off is pretty sharp as we make our way down the rankings, however. Only 15 law schools send more than half of their class into BigLaw jobs, and only about 30 schools total send more than 25% of their class into BigLaw jobs.

What's the highest paying job out of Law School?

It’s well known that the highest paying jobs out of law school are at so-called “Big Law” firms. These are law firms that have 500 or more attorneys and have offices in cities around the world. Their clients are often corporations and high net worth individuals.

What's the average salary of a BigLaw lawyer?

Most of those firms had different salaries (usually $10-15K less) for the rest of the country. Even then, it was only the most prestigious firms (maybe 50-75 firms if that) who paid so much. The overwhelming majority of “biglaw” firms paid something in the range of $75-80K to first years.

Which is the largest law firm in the US?

There’s no standard definition of Biglaw, but it includes the group of private US firms that employ the most lawyers (500 or so), smaller firms that adopt the Biglaw salary scale, and medium-sized firms with substantial international presence. As you’d probably expect, you’ll find Biglaw jobs in big cities.
