Lesson 36: Free from the Law (Romans 7:16) Bible.org

1. In my judgment, one of the most difficult theological issues in the Bible is that of the believers relationship to the law of God. Since the word law is used 19 times in Romans 7, clearly that is Pauls theme. I was hoping that the Lord might come before I got to this chapter! I still have some time to be rescued before I get to the most difficult part! In Romans 7 Paul expounds on his statement in Romans 6:14, For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law, but under grace. In 6:15-23, he used the analogy of slavery to show that we will not sin under grace because we have become enslaved to God and righteousness. In chapter 7, he explains what it means to be free from the law and how this relates to breaking free from sins tyranny. The theme in chapter 6 was sin; Paul uses that word 17 times there. In his mind, there was a direct correlation between sin and the law. In 1 Corinthians 15:56 he says, The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. So there are several parallels between chapters 6 & 7 (Leon Morris, The Epistle to the Romans [Eerdmans/Apollos], p. 270): Believers have died to sin (6:2) and they have died to the law (7:4). We have been freed from sin (6:18, 22) and we are released from the law (7:6). We walk in newness of life (6:4) and we serve in newness of the Spirit (7:6). Our victory over sin is tied to our union with Christ in His death and resurrection (6:8-11). Our release from the law and its sin-arousing power is because we are now joined to the crucified and risen Lord (7:4).

What is the Law in the Bible? — Meaning of the Law

Just Now

1. The Hebrew word for “law” is torah and the Greek word is nomos. The basic meaning is to provide direction or instruction. The English word “law” occurs over 400 times in the Bible. Sometimes the word “law” simply refers to the entire Old Testament. For example, in John 12:34 the crowd tells Jesus that they heard in the Law that the Christ would remain forever. Since no such statement is recorded in the Pentateuch, it must be a reference to another part of the Old Testament. In fact, 2 Samuel 7:15-16 and Micah 5:2 clearly states that the Messiah would reign forever. In John 15:25 Jesus quotes the Law, but both Psalm 35:19 and Psalm 69:4 reveal that He paraphrases passages from the book of the Psalms. Our last example is 1 Corinthians 14:21, where Paul paraphrases Isaiah 28:11-12 and refers to the prophecy as the Law. This means that the “Law” was used to refer to the entire Old Testament, also called the Scriptures.

Are there any verses in the bible that contradict themselves?

Either way you read it, you may come across certain verses or passages that seem to contradict themselves, especially when read out of context. Contradictions are where parts of a text seem to say the opposite of what was said earlier in the same document.

Are there any laws that contradict gods promises?

No, not at all! For if human beings had received a law that could bring life, then everyone could be put right with God by obeying it. Does this mean, then, that the laws given to Moses contradict God's promises?

What does the bible say about law and liberty?

The notion that law and liberty are inseparable is another legacy of Christianity. Accordingly, God’s revealed will is regarded as the ‘higher law’, and therefore placed above human law. Then liberty is found under the law, God’s law, because as the Bible says, ‘the law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul’ (Psa 19:7).
